The truth is, imposter syndrome is a very real thing and it can stop you from achieving your goals. 70% of all workers deal with Impostor Syndrome at some point in their career.

In this article, I'm going to give you five tips to help you deal with imposter syndrome and finally start achieving your dreams.

The Acronym I want you to remember is WORTH.

  1. Welcome it.
  2. Own it.
  3. Real.
  4. Trust your skills.
  5. Help.

1. Welcome it.

Acknowledge that impostor syndrome is a real thing. If you've ever felt like a fraud, even though you're successful by all conventional measures, you're not alone. You might be suffering from impostor syndrome, a psychological phenomenon first described in the 1970s.

Even without any evidence and often very successful people with impostor syndrome feel like they're inadequate and undeserving of their accomplishments. They're afraid of being exposed as frauds and are constantly worried about being found out. If this sounds familiar, don't worry - you're not crazy. Impostor syndrome is a real thing, and it's actually quite common.

When you find yourself doubting your abilities, remember that you're not alone. You're just suffering from a normal psychological phenomenon.

2. Own it.

Understand that impostor syndrome is caused by self-doubt and insecurity.

So why do we feel like imposters? It's because of self-doubt and insecurity. We doubt our abilities and question whether we really deserve the success we've achieved. This can lead us to downplay our accomplishments and belittle our talents, so we feel like impostors—like we're just pretending to be something we're not.

Fortunately, there are ways to overcome impostor syndrome. By recognizing that self-doubt is normal, we can learn to reframe our thoughts and focus on our strengths. We can also build up our confidence by regularly practicing positive self-talk and setting realistic goals for ourselves. With time and effort, we can overcome impostor syndrome and become the confident, successful people we know we can be.

3. It is real.

Everyone feels like an impostor at some point. We've all been there—that moment when we're standing in front of a group of people and suddenly realize that we have no idea what we're doing. Our palms start to sweat, our heart races, and we start to feel like a complete impostor. Actually, impostor syndrome is surprisingly common, affecting 70% of the population at some point in their lives.

Even though it's often seen as a negative thing, there are actually some benefits to feeling like an impostor. For one thing, it can motivate us to push ourselves harder and strive for excellence. It can also help us empathize with others and build more meaningful connections.

So next time you're feeling like an impostor, remember that you're not alone and that there's nothing wrong with feeling a little bit out of your depth. Who knows? You might just surprise yourself with what you're capable of.

4. Trust your skills.

Your accomplishments are real, no matter how you feel about them. Humble brag or not, I’ve created some amazing product experiences. I’ve changed industries and built teams, but yet I still have feelings of not being good enough.

I’m sure you’ve done some amazing things in your career that you were really proud of, no matter how small they might have been. and you should be! You should be proud of all of your accomplishments, no matter how big or small they might be. Whether it's catching a fish, getting a new job, or even just making it through another day, your accomplishments are real and they matter. You’d be surprised at how impressed others are with your work, but only if you could read their minds.

Some people probably feel like impostors, so they are afraid to tell you how amazing you are. So don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Keep on being amazing, because you are.

5. Seek help.

Talk to someone about your impostor syndrome; it's often helpful to share your feelings with others. In some cases, feedback and a little bit of reassurance are all you need, and in today’s world, that is sometimes hard to come by.

Also, one of the best things you can do is talk to someone about it. It can be helpful to share your feelings with someone who will understand and can offer helpful advice. If you don't know anyone who's dealt with impostor syndrome, there are plenty of online resources available.

Remember that 70% of people have encountered imposter syndrome? It's likely your manager or your manager’s manager has dealt with it at some point. The important thing is to reach out and get some support. With a little help, you can overcome your impostor syndrome and start living your best life!
