I always cringe when I hear the word "boss." I think it's such an antiquated and demeaning term for all parties. I get that "like a boss" has had its moment in the sun, but let's put that aside for a moment.
When I hear someone say, "You're the best boss I've ever had." I hear this... "You're the best 'tell-me-what-to-do' person I've ever had." Maybe it's just me, but that is what I hear. On the flip side of that, I never say that I'm the boss in any way, shape, or form. I shouldn't be bossing anyone around.
Instead of that. Use the term "leader." How would that make both parties feel if someone came in and said, "You are the best leader I've ever had." That slight change in language completely reframes the comment and the context.
Think about how you talk about your team. I ALWAYS use "leader" in place of "boss" or "manager." I do that because it is what I expect from them. I don't want bosses or managers. I want leaders on my leadership team. If they are new to leadership, it's ok. Anyone who has partnered with me knows that we will get there together. Also, a quick note: no one on my team works "for" me; they work "with" me.
If you truly want to inspire your team and have them operate at a high level. Get rid of all the hierarchical language that you use. Intentionally change it and be explicit on why you're doing it.
Here are some tips to start to do this:
Change your mindset and habits. If you don't set the example, no one will take it seriously. You must believe it for others to believe it. If you look at teams as hierarchical and you frequently use the term "boss," there's no way to change or evolve what your team will do and believe. It starts with you.
Always correct people when they use this type of language. Don't let it go. If they call you the "boss," either correct them by calling them your partner or leader. I still prefer partner because it puts everyone on an even playing field, but if you must, use leader instead.
