Candid Feedback Made Simple

Giving candid feedback requires a definite framework. Whether you are using one-on-one, doing goal setting with your team, want to have normal feedback quarterly or you are a small business, you need to use a simple way to get a more conversational feedback.

When you are thinking about feedback, you want to think about the things you would like people to stop doing, the things you want people to start doing and the things you want them to continue doing. You don’t want to create these long formal processes for the feedback.

Here is a simple way to give candid feedback. It is called stop-start-continue.

# Stop

These are the things that aren’t working out. You are not making the team better in this way, you are holding us back this way.

Stop scheduling meetings when they could send emails or stop scheduling meetings giving nobody any context. Those can be dangerous when you are scheduling meetings with no context.

# Start

These are the things I’d like to see you do more of because they will help you improve your performance on the team.

Start sending agenda for your meetings and prepare so when people come to your meetings, everyone will understand what the meeting is for and they will also come prepared.

# Continue

These are the things you should continue doing because you are doing them well. It could be to continue sending out agendas, preparing teams for meetings, and presenting the context upfront so everybody comes prepared.

You can use this framework in any order, whether you use stop-start-continue or start-stop-continue. However, the best way to do it is totally upward since it’s a simple framework to get into.

So this is how stop-start-continue can help you provide a great framework for feedback.
